Your fingerprint is much in demand these days. Software firms, gyms, commercial complexes, residential projects even schools are getting biometrics access systems fitted where entry is possible only after the machine verifies your fingerprints.
Biometrics is an automated method to establish a customer’s identity from their unique physiological or behavioral characteristics.
“In the last year alone, we have installed over 450 units of biometrics access systems in Pune in software companies, manufacturing units and military units. We have also assisted in criminal investigations,” says Axis Software Private Limited manager (business Development) Kiran Kumbhar.
What’s more, the firm which installs biometric and smart card systems is working with banks where the clients’ identity will be confirmed through biometrics scanning for bank and ATM transactions, says Kumbhar.
This is how it works. ‘The machine confirms the identity by examining a unique physiological trait or behavioral characteristic like the fingerprint, iris, retina, or signature.”
All this for security’s sake. “The system denies entry to anyone who is not registered,” says Abs Fitness and Wellness Club proprietor Abhimanyu Sable, one of the recent users of the gadget. Gera Developers Executive Director Rohit Gera, got it installed at his office, Gera Legend and Gera 77, both commercial complexes. “it rules out problems like the key being duplicated or the swipe having multiple users,” he explains.
The system also keeps track of attendance and mobility of employees. At Xercom Information Technologies a biometric fingerprint has been in place for two years. Administration officer Nikhil Karpe says every time someone crosses the door, they have to identify themselves through the biometric.
“This helps us keep a record of their check- in and check- out time and we know for long they have stayed out of the premises during their working hours.”
The latest to jump onto the biometric bandwagon is Lexicon International School on Nagar Road that has installed a system outside the main gate and in each classroom. Says school administration official Priya Anand, “security reasons apart, it saves time and does away with a roll call.”
What is prohibitive though is the cost – Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakhs for a unit catering to a limited number of people. Says Gera, “It is an option in Gera’s Greensville at Kharadi, but the response is restricted because of the cost involved. But prices will drop as it gains popularity.
