Smart and savvy

Our homes are becoming increasingly smart nowadays. Today; it seems home is where the gadget is. Smart homes are those sleek homes, with all the latest technology and amenities, making our lives easier and comfortable.

With acute time constraints in a fast-paced world, people are opting for smart homes to make their life simpler and quicker. "I have a smart home with keyless entry; where I don't need a key to open the door. There is a four-digit code which one needs to remember. You can also change the code. It's more secure and you don't have to carry a key every time," says Shubhra Bharadwaj, 'a housewife.

Because of the increased stress and long working hours, people want to spend quality time at home. Once a draw for the tech savvy and the wealthy; smart homes are becoming common for the common man. The technology behind smart homes, is all the appliances and devices are receivers and the means of controlling the system such as remote control, are the transmitters.

"Everything is remote controlled; there are no switches at home, apart from few which I have kept for the servants to operate. If I am out of the house, and want to put on the air conditioner before I reach, I can do that. If you are lazy to switch off the fans and lights of the other room, you can do it with a remote;" adds Parul Sharma, a software engineer.

It is very beneficial for old people as merely pressing the right button can get the job done. If you want to keep a tab on your children, fitted in your room watchers fitted room where you can actually see what they are up to. The technology has developed so much that one can get an SMS, if the main door of your house is open. "Using a smart home is like better energy management as well as better water management," Says Rohit Gera, executive director, Gera Developments.

"One can put sensors for the lighting. If you have a motion sensor, when you step in the light get automatically on. Depending upon the natural light, the light gets on when it becomes dark. You can also set mood lighting for your home. The most important feature is the panic button, which is for old people. They just have to wear it on their wrist and the emergency number gets dialed if they press it. It's all about making your life simpler and comfortable."
